In this article, we are going to discuss the Social and Cultural Impacts of Movies.

What to look at?

Through the discussion, we are going to have an overlook on the history, the meaning of social and cultural impacts in general, how movies had such impacts on audience, and we’ll finally have a look on two movies and study their impacts.
The History
Society
Society, as a term, means a gathering of people living together in a somehow ordered community. In the ancient world, most societies had stories told by storytellers, whose job was to preserve these stories and pass them unto later generations, afterwards they started writing down those stories on clay tablets and stones for more preservation and credibility.
These old societies put so much time and effort to preserve stories because they instinctually knew their importance. These stories helped founding the common ground on which such society were built, they helped weaving the moral fabric, and ultimately giving people a taste of shared experience and the common sense of belonging.
Culture
On the other hand, culture, as Oxford dictionary puts it, is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively, and an understanding and appreciation of them.
In this scope, stories can be considered an integral part of any society’s culture.
The Definition
But the question remains, what is a social impact, and what is a cultural impact?
Well to put it in simple words, social impact is some kind of change found to address an urgent or persistent social issue, whether the issue is local or not it does not matter, what does matter is that the issue affects a society or more, like climate change, hunger, poverty and so on.
And cultural impact is the change that occurs on any given society in terms of the norms, practices, beliefs to name a few. It is the way culture affects society.
Nowadays...
Some hundred years ago, on 28 December 1895 to be exact, the world witnessed public screening of ten of the Lumière brothers’ short films in Paris, thus that day was regarded as the breakthrough of projected cinematographic motion pictures.
And from that day forth, an emerging industry was born, the film industry.
Film industry characterized modern societies, like the art of storytelling did with the ancient world, but film industry is by far a more impactful sector.
And although movies are “stories told with pictures”, as Syd Field puts it in his book “Screenplay: The Foundation of Screenwriting “, but unlike stories, movies have the ability to engage a larger audience, more effectively, and faster than plain stories.

Cultural Impact Movies: Avengers: Endgame

Cultural Impact Movies are movies that impact culture in a really deep and profound way, the impact these movies impose might resonate for decades. Success of such movies is linked directly to the cultural impact they create.

A Final Word...
In the end, what did the above mentioned movies achieve? What social and cultural impacts did they have?
The Social Dilemma dealt with an ongoing problem linked to excessive and addictive usage of social networks, it met with many voices from civil community organizations, which are ringing a bell on the dangerous role these networks are playing. Thus a social impact was met.
The Avengers franchise was released in times of uncertainty amongst people, especially younger generations, and set role models along with new values, new ways of thinking, and a different approach to different problems. Again a cultural impact was brilliantly met in this franchise.
